Now on view at Leica Gallery Los Angeles, Car Pictures by Adali Schell which explores human connection shaped by youth car culture.
Car Pictures by Adali Schell is a documentary-driven exhibition examining identity, memory, and human connection through the intimate yet isolating environments shaped by car culture in Los Angeles.
Adali Schell is a Los Angeles–based photographer whose work explores themes of identity, memory, and community. Drawing from his upbringing in Southern California and family roots in rural Ohio, his practice is grounded in the documentary tradition, capturing personal narratives shaped by the environments and relationships that surround them.
In Car Pictures, Schell explores how his relationships are fostered within the intimate confines of the automobile while remaining constrained by the isolating nature of the highway system. A dark-green, vegetable oil–powered Mercedes 300D plays a central role in the series, functioning as both subject and vessel as he navigates Los Angeles’ car-dependent sprawl.
Framed through windows, mirrors, and lights, the photographs reveal the inescapable presence of cars in everyday life. The automobile becomes both a site of connection and separation, reflecting the tension between closeness and solitude embedded in contemporary infrastructure.
